What is it I do all day? January 23 2015

People often say to me "Your are so lucky! It must be lovely spending all day making jewellery". Yes I am very fortunate and I count my blessings every day. However, contrary to popular belief,  I don't just make jewellery all day. When I wanted to change from my past career, a college science lecturer,  I was lucky enough to have not only my own inner drive , but the loving support of my husband and family to enable me to follow my passion. Like any small business the thing you are known for is only a small part of the actual mechanics of the business. Admin, sales, marketing, IT, customer service and finance all still have to take place. I 'do' most of these jobs and so some days I don't get into the workshop at all. READ the full article here

New Additions to the Spring Collection June 30 2014

Spring continues to blossom!

I have  just added nine more products to my Spring Cherry Blossom Collection and there are several others ready to be added in the next couple of weeks.

Earlier last month I launched my new Spring Collection with great success. This is probably one of my most labour intensive collections. It was in the research and development stage for three times longer than any other range I have made so far.  The matt silver jewellery with oxidised designs were very popular, as expected. I have recently added a necklace, bracelet and earrings to this collection. However I wanted to add more. I wanted to try something new. I wanted to introduce different techniques into my jewellery.

My mother gave me a very stylish antique, Japanese cigarette case for my birthday last year.

I  never have and will never will smoke cigarettes. I was given the cigarette case not to hold cigarettes but as a beautiful case for my business cards. I love this case. Tiny strands of silver and 18ct gold have been  carefully  inlaid into the metal to produce this very elegant design. This case was the inspiration to my new 18ct gold oxidised silver additions to the Spring Collection.
Pendants were to first to be made in the black and gold including this commission set with a lovely diamond.

In addition I designed some gorgeous single blossom earrings , which are easy to wear and go with everything. (I think these may become my new favourite earrings).

A necklace and bracelet are set to be added to the website later this week ready for Cambridge Open Studios. I am really excited to be adding the most amazing cuffs to the collection the following week .

Come and see the new additions to the Spring family at Cambridge Open Studios. I will be exhibiting in Grantchester Village Hall, Cambridge on 5th , 6th, 12th & 13th July 2014.

Jewellery Courses June 06 2014

Personalised Jewellery Courses

"Do you run jewellery courses?" is a question that I am asked over and over again. For years I resisted but then, after a series of requests I thought "why not?"

In the 1990s I attended a jewellery making evening course. The course was run in a school woodwork and metal classroom. There were no jewellers benches, limited equipment which had to be shared with the whole group and although the teacher was experienced her time was  divided between all the class members. The majority of the lesson was spent waiting for the attention of the teacher or waiting  for a specific piece of equipment. I learnt some good basic skills but was deeply frustrated in the process. I have since attended several specialist courses in  jewellery schools which were excellent  but very expensive. I decided I would run the style of course that I would like to attend myself as a novice jeweller.

My jewellery day courses are held in my workshop which has two jewellers benches and a full range of specialist jewellers tools and machinery. On the day you will have my undivided attention from 9.30a.m to 4.30p.m. The courses are for a full day rather than a series of evening classes to allow you to become immersed in. The atmosphere on the day is fun and relaxed. All refreshments  and a light lunch are provided at no additional charge. The structure of each course is flexible to allow it to be tailored to the specific needs and requirements of each participant. Whether you are very focused, or would prefer a more relaxed learning experience these  courses are perfect for you as we work at your pace and to your ability.

There  are currently 5 different courses available. The ideal first course is  'Make a ring in a day' as this teaches you good basic skills, but any of the courses can be taken with no previous experience.

Recent testimonial

"I have had an amazing day with my friend Heather as the wonderful Karen Faulkner-Dunkley took us through the making of a ring - an artist date for us to play at and really practical. I am now proudly wearing my new ring, designed, made, bent, hammered, annealed and cooled, polished and buffed all by my own fair hands!
Now, I love Karen's designs and some of you may know I own a few pieces of intricate beautiful jewellery. Today I gained so much more appreciation for just how amazing these bespoke pieces are. I now have huge admiration for the work that has gone into my ring, never mind my Torque and my new Champagne necklace!
Give it a go, it's a magical way to spend a day! "      Helena Holrick

Calendar Girls Style Photo Shoot March 30 2014

Incredible, Inspirational and Emotional

Earlier this week I took two days away from my workshop to take part in something amazing!

About 10 years ago I met Sally Veck at a craft event . Sally loves my jewellery so her partner ordered her an

Ivy leaf necklace as a gift  for Christmas. Her daughter, Eleanor, who was about 15 at the time ordered a matching pair of earrings to surprise her mum at Christmas. In April 2007 Eleanor was killed in Iraq serving her country. This beautiful girl was only 19 years old.

Sally has become an active member of SSAFA Bereaved Families Support Group. Members are from all walks of life, and have all lost a close family member whilst serving in our forces. Sally has raised thousands of pounds for SSAFA through her 'Big Brew Up' events . Her role in SSAFA has seen her take part of the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall in 2013, attended countless dinners and garden parties  and she has even met Prince Charles!

Charlotte making Sally more gorgeousA 'Calendar Girls' style calendar is Sally's latest project. In a short period of time she persuaded  mums, dads, aunts and uncles of the support group  to model for the calendar.  Steve Docks  agreed to do the photography and the fabulous wedding venue Hill Place, in Swanmore, Hampshire was made fully available for two days of photography. Owner of Segais Hair and beauty salons ,Charlotte Falkenau kindly donated her her time and expertise to make the models look even more glamorous. I took my  jewellery  to the venue so that the models could choose  a statement piece so they had something to wear!

When I arrived at Hill place on Monday morning I was greeted by a glass of champagne (which flowed liberally throughout the two days) and offers of food. Sally's mum had a mission to ensure that everyone consumed their weight in food over the two days. The food was fabulous. Sausage and bacon for breakfast, cottage pie, rhubarb crumble, a whole fresh salmon and salmon and cake……..lots of cake. No one went hungry, but  amazingly everyone stayed sober!

No one had modelled  before so modelling was a challenge and posing nude took everyone way outside their comfort zone. There were emotional times during the two days; it would have been surprising if there hadn't been considering the reason why the group had been formed, but we had so much fun. I can honestly that I haven't laughed so much for ages. We used lots of rooms in the house and it always seemed that there was more laughter coming from the a different room!

What is Sally Hiding? What is Sally hiding?

Memories from the day:

Photographs of beautiful young men and women taken before their time; the courage  of parents & relatives baring all for the cause; Sally's mum's false eyelashes, the bikers who brought their fabulous bikes for the  photo shoot; red knickers; the need for BIG teapots; the bottles of champagne; laughter; amazing cakes and 'The Laugh' - one that makes you smile just to think about; the lovely people; new friends.

I write this early on Mothers' Day morning. I spent yesterday evening with my mother who I have  just had breakfast with. My 20 year old son is asleep safe in bed having come home late after a night on the town celebrating a friends birthday - he will be off to work later shortly. My 23 year old daughter is getting ready to take me out for to town for lunch. Both my children are the age of those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. I feel very blessed to be able to spend time with them and talk to them when ever I want to. I feel great admiration for all those men and women I met earlier this week who have bore the unimaginable pain  of losing a child and having face life without them.

What next?

The calendar is for 2015 and so will be available for sale later this year. Simon Gregory of Clear and Creative Communications Limited has already agreed to produce the artwork for the calendar .

We need amiable printers to help print the calendar and a good PR expert to help spread 'the word'. Can you help?

Please email  Sally directly with offers of help and donations

Thank you for reading this post . Please share and spread the word to show your support for our forces and their families.

The Perfect Stylish Jewellery - Perfect Earrings For Rectangular Face Shapes November 11 2013

Perfect Jewellery for Rectangular Faces

Choosing jewellery to suit you, your personality, tastes and lifestyle can be tricky.....there is so much choice available both on and off line. Being aware of your face shape is a good way to narrow down your selection and ensure that the earrings you choose works with your physical characteristics and emphasises your best features.

In my last blog I gave a quick guide to determining your face shape.

If you missed it, no worries, here is the link

 The Rectangular Face

Sarah Jessica Parker is a celebrity example of a rectangular face shape. Her face is  long and thin with a fairly square jaw line. Her  forehead, cheekbones and jaw-line are all about the same width.
Your choice of earrings can either exaggerate or minimise the shape of the face. Round earrings are good as these soften the jawline and add width to the face. Angular earrings  will exaggerate your jawline so it is advisable  to avoid these. Stud earrings are really good for you, drawing attention to the centre section of your face, shortening its length. Long dangly earrings have the effect of lengthening the face , so are not your best choice.
